The jokes are bearable, but boy oh boy, there are a LOT of time puns.ДЄll thing considered, I enjoyed Alice II, not only as a good sequel, but because it manages to be its own movie at the same TIMEвЂ¦ (get it?)

Whereas that was full of Tim BurtonвЂ™s trademark darkness, James Bobin (the new director) fills the movie with more jokes and comic relief.

The movieвЂ™s tone is different to the first one. Old characters return, as well as some new additions, such as the Seconds, TimeвЂ™s bumbling brainless workers who remind me of the clock creature from Return To Oz. The story and actors are also great, and the movie is dedicated to the late Alan Rickman, who voices the Caterpillar. It was a nice way of putting a twist on something youвЂ™re used to. It doesnвЂ™t make things jump out at you, but it adds depth and detail. The visuals are amazing, especially how they have used 3D. She travels back in time to restore the HatterвЂ™s good nature, even though it means having to clash with Time himself (Sacha Baron Cohen). When Alice (Mia Wasikowska) returns to Wonderland (through a mirror, or вЂlooking glassвЂ™), she finds the Mad Hatter to be in a deep state of depression (possibly because he looks like heвЂ™s still wearing his Jack Sparrow teeth, from Pirates Of The Caribbean). Mind you, from what we read of him he might also have been dragged into Operation Yewtree, but thatвЂ™s another story.ДisneyвЂ™s winning streak continues with the sequel to 2010вЂ™s live-action adaption of the classic book and the animated film. If Lewis Carroll were alive today, I think he would approve. They include a bittersweet one the late Alan Rickman again gives sonorous voice to the Caterpillar.ДЄlso back in the voice cast are Timothy Spall, Michael Sheen and Stephen Fry, while Matt Lucas has never been better matched with a role than he is as twin weirdos Tweedledum and Tweedledee. There she finds that her ghastly, jilted suitor Hamish (Leo Bill) is scheming to humiliate her and her genteel, impoverished mother (Lindsay Duncan). There are so many trick shots and special effects, so much fairground spectacle, so much kitsch and bombast that the human factor here risks being squashed out of existence.Mia Wasikowska, at 26, might now be a little old to play Alice, but she again does a fine job as the engagingly spirited Victorian heroine Instead of focusing on the plot, youвЂ™ll notice the extravagant whiskers of the Victorian gentlemen or the miniature portraits hanging in the background or the different shades in AliceвЂ™s multi-coloured kimono. In any given scene, there will always be a myriad of distractions. There is just too much thrown into the mix. The colour is luxuriant the costume and production design are lavish in the extreme.ДЇor all its strengths, the film feels very overcooked.

There are constant switches in size and perspective and its scenes of characters running down corridors or falling from great heights. The use of 3D is far more inventive than in most movies blending live action and animation.

WasikowskaвЂ™s Alice is resilient and single-minded: a no-nonsense Victorian action-heroine who defies the doctorвЂ™s description of her as a 'textbook case of female hysteria.' ThereвЂ™s an obvious poignancy in hearing the late Alan RickmanвЂ™s instantly recognisable voice as Absolem, the sardonic caterpillar who beckons Alice back down to Underland.
